Keltic Ties has designed and manufactured thousands of high-quality ties for Old Boys across the UK over the years.
With many schools having a history dating back several hundred years, and the Old Boy form being in use for a hundred years or more we understand the importance and privilege of having a tie that identifies a connection amongst former pupils of Primary and Secondary schools within this elite network.
Our Old Boys ties are made here in the UK from either silk or yarns made from recycled plastic bottles, so not only do you get exceptional quality but we can also offer lead times of just 3-4 weeks, much quicker than ties made offshore in China.
If you are looking to create a new old boys tie design, our artists can produce free visuals to bring your ideas to life, which can be in your inbox (without obligation) within 24-48 hours. We are also experts at perfectly recreating existing ties, either exactly as they are or with changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are “Old Boys ties” exactly?
“Old Boys ties” typically refer to ties for alumni of a school or members of an old boys’ association (often tied to former students of a particular college or secondary school). They are a way for alumni to show pride in and connection to their alma mater long after graduation. These ties usually carry the traditional colors, crests, or motifs of the school, sometimes with slight variations to distinguish them from current student ties. They’re often worn at reunions, alumni dinners, or formal events related to the school’s alumni network.
How do Keltic’s old boys ties differ from the regular school ties?
Keltic’s old boys ties are made with the same quality as their school ties but often with an extra touch of prestige. Many alumni associations opt for silk or premium woven polyester for a finer finish. The design might be similar to the school tie (to reflect the school identity) but sometimes with a subtle difference – for instance, the addition of the word “Old Boys” in small text on the back label, or a slightly different stripe arrangement to denote an alumni version. Keltic can also make the old boys tie in a different material (like pure silk) if the original school tie was polyester, giving it a more luxurious feel as a special alumni edition. Essentially, the old boys ties honor the original design while being tailored for former students who often prefer a classic, high-quality accessory.
Is there a minimum order? Our alumni group is not very large.
Keltic’s minimum order is usually around 36–50 ties for a custom run. Old boys associations might not need huge quantities at once, but consider that you can use these ties over time. You might order the minimum and then have stock to sell or give out at alumni events for a couple of years. Since alumni span generations, interest can accumulate. If even that quantity is challenging, Keltic may suggest options like doing a joint order with a current school order (if the designs are similar) to effectively lower the standalone minimum, or potentially using the jacquard trim method if applicable. However, usually alumni are keen to have such ties, and you could even open pre-orders with your members to reach the number. Given the quality, these ties often become treasured mementos, so it’s worth getting them done right.
Can the ties be personalized for our alumni (e.g., showing the graduation year)?
Typically, old boys ties are not individually personalized with each person’s year (that would require many small batches). Instead, they carry generalized symbols of the school or a unifying element (like “Old Boys Association” text or the school motto). However, one approach if you want to mark a specific cohort is to create a limited-edition tie – for example, a tie for “50th Reunion of Class of 1975” with a small text woven on the tipping or the tail end. Keltic could do that, but it’s a custom weave and you’d need to order a batch (and it would only be for those alumni). For most purposes, it’s better to keep the tie design universal to any alumni and then perhaps use other items (like a small pin or certificate) to denote specific graduation years at events. Keltic will work with you on design – perhaps including the founding year of the school or the alumni association logo on the tie to give it significance without narrowing its audience.
Are Keltic’s old boys ties available in silk?
Yes. In fact, many old boys and alumni groups prefer silk ties for their lustre and tradition. Keltic can manufacture the ties in 100% silk, which gives a luxurious feel – befitting, say, an elite boarding school’s alumni or a long-standing grammar school old boys club. Silk ties have that smooth sheen and drape that some alumni love. Alternatively, Keltic’s premium recycled polyester is also available and has the advantage of being easier to care for while still looking excellent. Some associations choose silk for a premium option and polyester for wider distribution. Keltic will accommodate either; just know silk is often slightly more expensive. However, since alumni might be purchasing these themselves (not school-funded), they might be willing to pay a bit more for a silk version.
We have female alumni too (“Old Girls”) – can Keltic provide something for them?
Definitely. Many alumni groups now include everyone, not just “old boys.” Keltic can provide ladies’ scarves in the matching design of the old boys tie. These could be elegant silk scarves with the school colors or crest, suitable to wear with women’s business or formal attire. They can also do bow ties or cravats, which some women might prefer. The key is inclusivity – so offering a scarf version is a popular solution. It can use the same stripe pattern or emblem on a square or oblong scarf. That way, all alumni have an accessory they can wear proudly to events, regardless of gender or wardrobe preferences. When you approach Keltic, mention the need for a complementary scarf, and they’ll design it in tandem with the tie so that both look cohesive.
How do we present or sell these ties to members?
Once Keltic delivers the ties, it’s up to the association to distribute them. Many alumni associations present the tie to new members when they join the alumni group or attend their first reunion. Some package it in a nice presentation box (Keltic can supply presentation boxes as well, which add a touch of class to the gifting). If selling, you could list them on the school or association’s website, or sell at alumni events. The story of the tie is a selling point too – emphasize the heritage in its design or the eco-friendly aspect if applicable (“made from recycled materials in our traditional school colors”). Alumni often find that very appealing and are happy to purchase one as it connects them tangibly to their school days. In short, the tie can be more than just attire; it’s a symbolic piece – and presenting it with that in mind (whether as a gift or merch) makes it special.
Can Keltic handle repeat small orders if we run out in a few years?
Yes. Once the initial production is done, Keltic keeps your design on file. If a couple of years down the line you need, say, 20 more ties, they typically can do a smaller run for reorders (often at a slightly higher unit cost if below minimum, but they try to be reasonable for reorders). Alternatively, you might plan ahead and order extra in the first batch which is usually most cost-effective. But rest assured, Keltic values long-term relationships – they won’t leave your alumni hanging. You could also coordinate with the school’s next uniform order or another association’s order to piggyback if needed. Communication is key: let Keltic know your alumni tie might be an ongoing item and they’ll suggest the best way to manage inventory and reorders over time.
